Founded in 1986 and located in the West Amman suburb of Khalda, the New English School (NES) is a coeducational private school catering for the 2-18 age range. From Kindergarten to age 14 students have traditionally received a bilingual education. In the past decade, however, the school has developed a thriving English Stream which now begins in the Primary School (Grades 1-3) as an alternative curricula option for parents who do not wish to subscribe to the bilingual variant. From the beginning of the Junior School, i.e. Grade 4, the English Stream is sub-divided into extended and regular classes, structured according students’ English Language competency. Entry into the extended groups (Gr 4-8) is determined by selection tests and interviews. In Grades 7 and 8, English Stream students now significantly outnumber their bilingual counterparts. Based on the National Curriculum for England and Wales, the school’s varied pre-IGCSE programme provides the foundation for IGCSE (G 9-10) and GCE AS/A-Level studies (G11-12). From age 11 to 14 (Grades 6-8), students are prepared for the Cambridge Checkpoint tests for English, Mathematics and Science.
